BAS reconciliation checklist for Australian bookkeepers

Before BAS lodgement, unresolved transaction questions become urgent. A consistent checklist helps separate coding work from missing client information so the practice can close gaps earlier.

Review unresolved bank transactions

Identify items that remain uncoded, partially explained or dependent on client confirmation. Resolve straightforward items first, then isolate the transactions that genuinely need more information.

  • Unclear merchant descriptions
  • Potentially personal transactions
  • Unknown business purpose
  • Missing supporting receipts
  • Transactions awaiting client response

Check the information behind GST treatment

A transaction description alone may not provide enough context to support the intended treatment. Where the business purpose or source evidence is unclear, obtain the missing information before relying on an assumption.

Close the communication loop

Review every outstanding client query before lodgement. Keep the answer, receipt and final bookkeeping decision together so there is a clear record of how the item was resolved.

A recurring workflow throughout the quarter is usually more manageable than leaving all clarification until BAS time.

Where HelpMyBooks fits

Turn unanswered transaction questions into a trackable workflow.

HelpMyBooks turns unclear bank transactions into plain-English Who / What / Why questions, sends a secure client link, collects the answer and receipt, and returns the context to the bookkeeper for review.
